da supremo: The former Atletico Madrid centre-back recently signed a new contract with the north London club until 2023, with his previous deal set to expire next summer, although the revelation about his emotions following Pochettino’s departure and subsequent replacement – broken by The Athletic – puts a different spin on things and has sparked a discussion amongst Tottenham fans on Twitter.
“When news reached Alderweireld that Pochettino was to be succeeded by Jose Mourinho, he couldn’t hide his excitement. On the evening Pochettino left and word spread that Mourinho would replace him, Alderweireld was on international duty with Belgium — helping the team thrash Cyprus 6-1 in Brussels. He told his countrymen that with Mourinho arriving, he might just be staying in north London after all.”
Alderweireld reportedly told his fellow countrymen that the Argentine’s exit and Mourinho’s arrival might see him stay in north London after all, and really does shine the spotlight on his and Pochettino’s relationship.
The 30-year-old has started 17 of Spurs’ 18 Premier League games this season, grabbing two assists, and remained a vital player under Pochettino despite their differences.

Despite that, it seems as if some Spurs fans on Twitter are disappointed with the news about his feelings following the former Southampton manager’s dismissal and Mourinho’s appointment.
This supporter said that they can understand why the centre-back reacted as he reportedly did, although added that they could not hide their disappointment.
These two fans seemed a bit more annoyed with the update.
One said that they “thought Toby had more class than that”, whereas another thought the news reeked of “utter disrespect”.
Elsewhere, another fan also expressed disappointment, but one supporter named ‘Dougal’ went as far to say that this update has soured the positive news that was Alderweireld’s contract extension – another fan said that the situation was “really sad”.
