da pixbet: Three days are left before the Championship kicks off in earnest. It is like Christmas Eve for fans up and down the country, but until it all begins, they will have to make do with the latest news from the transfer window! Today’s Championship transfer roundup is comprised of Aston Villa’s interest in Kalvin Phillips as well as their desire to bring in his namesake Matt, and Nottingham Forest’s confirmed loan signing of Rafa Mir.
Villa offer Phillips pay increase
Report: According to Football Insider, Villa have offered Kalvin Phillips a massive pay-rise as they attempt to take him to Villa Park before the transfer window closes on August 8th. They are apparently willing to give him £60,000 a week as part of a five-year contract.
Verdict: Considering that Dean Smith and co have already made 10 signings this summer, it is worth asking when they are going to be able to sit back and be happy with the squad they have put together. That they are looking for another central midfielder is baffling – they already have six, plus Jack Grealish in a slightly higher position up the pitch. Under Smith, the Villans generally set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation last season, which means there would only be space for two men in the middle of the park if they play the same way this time around. The 23-year-old would be a huge loss to the Whites, however. His WhoScored rating of 6.98 was the fifth-highest of the whole squad in the past campaign, and he made the most tackles per game out of all of his teammates. The Elland Road outfit should be doing all they can to keep him in Yorkshire beyond next Thursday.
How likely is the deal? 5/10
Smith also targets West Brom winger
Report: Football Insider is also reporting that Villa are interested in West Brom’s Matt Phillips. The Scotland international is in the last year of his contract, which means the Baggies will need to sell him this summer if they want to avoid him potentially leaving on a free next year.
Verdict: As said previously, it is perplexing to see Villa still linked with so many players after having signed what is close to a whole new team. Phillips did have a decent season last time out, scoring five goals and providing six assists for the Hawthorns outfit in 30 matches, but he did not exactly set the world alight. Villa have already signed three wingers this summer in Jota, Anwar El Ghazi (on a permanent deal following his loan spell last term) and, most recently, Mohamed Trezeguet, so there doesn’t appear to be a need for the former QPR man. The 28-year-old is capable of providing in England’s top tier though, having made eight goals in two of the three seasons he has played at the highest level, which is perhaps something that has caught Smith’s eye.
How likely is the deal? 4/10
Mir joins Forest on loan
Report: Nottingham Forest have confirmed the loan signing of Rafa Mir from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 22-year-old will stay with the Championship team until next summer before returning to Molineux.
Verdict: Mir joined Wolves in 2018 but he has failed to kick on from then and made just four appearances for the Midlands outfit. He spent last season on loan in Spain’s second-tier and managed to net just seven times in 30 games, which was disappointing. This spell at Forest, therefore, may make or break the former Valencia forward’s time in England. Should he impress, there may be a future for him in Nuno Espirito Santo’s team, but should he fail, it will be even more difficult to break through. Mir did score five times in 10 appearances for Spain’s U21 and was prolific at youth level and for the B team of his former club, so the talent is there, but now is the time show it.
How likely is the deal? Completed
