According to The Northern Echo, Leeds United have made initial contact with Newcastle United over striker Dwight Gayle before Thursday’s transfer deadline, and he would be their best signing of the summer.
What’s the word, then?
Well, The Northern Echo report that the Yorkshire outfit, as well as Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion, have been in touch with the Magpies’ hierarchy about the possibility of signing the 28-year-old attacker before the window slams shut tomorrow.
The Northern Echo says that Toon manager Steve Bruce doesn’t want to lose Gayle and will spend his time convincing him to remain on Tyneside with the beginning of the new Premier League season imminent.
The report adds that the man who scored 23 goals for the Baggies in England’s second tier in 2018/19 is concerned that he could find himself down the pecking order under Bruce at St James’ Park.
A tremendous signing
Leeds may have got their campaign off to a dream start with a 3-1 win against Bristol City at the weekend, but there is no doubt about their lack of depth and quality up top following the departure of Kemar Roofe to Anderlecht on Tuesday.

That has left Patrick Bamford as the only senior centre-forward available to Marcelo Bielsa, with his only back-ups coming in the form of U23 duo Ryan Edmondson and Kun Temunuzhkov.
The Whites have also been linked with a loan move for Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah by reliable insider Phil Hay, suggesting that a new striker is very much on the agenda.
There is no doubt that Gayle would be a brilliant addition, given he clearly knows where the net is at this level – 59 goals in 100 Championship outings is proof of that.
16 assists in the same period shows he is more than just a goalscorer though, and he should also be full of confidence following his exploits for West Brom last term.

Leeds may have signed someone of the calibre of Helder Costa this summer, but Gayle would trump him and then some. Given his ability to find the net regularly, he really could be the difference between the club winning promotion or not.
